In 1999 there were eight gold winners, three being in the cold climate region. They were: Christian Builders in Minnesota (Custom Home), Ryan Homes in New York (Affordable Home), and Colorado Dream Homes in Colorado (Production Home). A panel of judges who evaluated applications on energy performance and the integration of energy efficiency into the design, construction, and marketing of new homes chose the winners.
Energy efficient features in the award winning home included Andersen Millennium low-e, gas-filled windows, highly insulating (R-15) exterior doors, 2 by 6 framing that allowed a thick blanket of insulation to be placed in the wall cavity, and a geothermal heat pump for efficient heating and cooling. Christian Builders used an extensive air-sealing package to reduce air infiltration and to reduce heat loss through windows, none were placed on the north side of the home. This home was built in conjunction with the Minnesota Suburban Northwest Builders Association as a demonstration for the city of Elk River, Minnesota.
